frequently asked questions
How do I check my tyres?
You must check your tread depth and tyre pressure regularly – especially before a long journey. You can briefly check your tyre pressure by looking at them a little closer – if they look flat, you should take your car to a tyre fitting garage to check and get them inflated if necessary. To test your tyres’ tread depth, take a 20p coin and insert it into the grooves on one of your tyres, making sure you test the inner/centre and outer tread. You will need to turn the wheel left to right to achieve this. If you can’t see the outer band on the coin, your tyres are above the legal limit. If you can see it, that tyre could be unsafe and you’ll need to get it inspected by a technician. Repeat this process for all tyres. The only way to be 100% sure your tyres are safe is to inspect them on a ramp, just in case the inner wall is damaged.
How can I tell when my tyres need changing?
If you notice your car doesn’t handle or grip the road as well in poor weather conditions as it used to, it takes longer to stop when you brake, the tyre tread is low, or there’s evidence of perishing/ cracking, this may point to weathered tyres.
Why aren’t all punctures repairable?
Technicians consider these factors when determining whether a puncture is repairable or not: location, size, tyre type, and general tyre condition. If your puncture is located outside of the central portion of the tyre and nearer to the sidewall, for example, it would generally be unrepairable. The sidewall bears most of the load and so a puncture repair could potentially weaken its structure and therefore pose a safety risk. This part of the tyre also flexes when the vehicle is in motion which may not allow for repairs to hold for long.
